Proper Food and Water storage in Office

There are no unquestionable standards or specific limitations regarding long-term food storage. Depending on your concern you may only keep minimum amount of canning and dry food items which can last for decades or you can come up with a complex ration for all your family members including frozen meat and dry fruit. One way or another it may be a good starting point to make a detailed plan based on how many calories of every supply type your family members require per week or month.

  • Most common options to choose from are: Freeze Dried meal (up to 20 years of storage); Dehydrated Foods (can last up to 15 years); MRES (usually expires within 5 years)
  • In addition to half prepared and dry food most experts recommend to include white rice, wheat, and beans as a necessary part of your emergency ration.
  • Remember that achieving a proper storage condition for a product can sometimes be even more important than a product itself. Meaning that choosing a food container try to make it as reliable and multifunctional as possible, not only keeping food from previous expiration but protecting it as well. One of the best options would certainly be multilayer laminated plastic and aluminum bags and “PETE” (bottles made of polyethylene terephthalate). Paper bags are not generally recommended. However if you're using it make sure to change them at least once in 4-5 months. Be aware that metal cans may even be considered dangerous because of their rust effect.
  • Keep in mind that a proper temperature that dry foods storage requires needs to be at least lower when 75 degrees F.
  • Besides a required temperature some items (cooking oil for instance) needs to be kept out of the light.
  • Consider an additional protection from infection, insects, and rodents.

Optimum Water storage: We’ve already discussed the importance of water and how to find, store and purify it. It is recommended to store 1 gal per person per day for 2 weeks. It becomes impossible to store enough water for 1 year for a person. Having a source of water and knowing how to purify it, becomes very important.
