Most people will call 911 only a few times in their life. Making an emergency call seems to be easy at first. But an emotional shock or even a simple distraction during any kind of emergency may seriously get in the way while you're reporting it. So it is important to not only know a proper way of generally reporting an accident but also keep in mind certain specifications regarding different kinds of events. Try to find some time to practice it especially with your kids every once in a while for even only a few words in extreme situation can sometimes be a cost of a human life.
The first and the most important is to remember while you reporting an accident is to stay calm no matter what happened. Also don't let your respect of 911 systems be become an intimidation. You may have to take a few deep breaths before making a call in order to make sure you have the situation under control, for if you'll speak too fast or too slow you’ll probably lose even more time and possibly even create a misunderstanding which most of the times can't be afforded.
Next thing you have to keep in mind is that for a proper 911 report information needs to be given in a certain order.
- The location of the emergency is the most important thing so it's always comes first. Before going trough any details let the dispatcher know your name and phone number. It is very important for dispatcher to have a confirmed phone number so he or she could call you back if necessary. Keep in mind that no matter how urgent the situation is it will only take a few seconds to provide 911 systems with your coordinates making a report the proper way. It may be possible that you will be transferred to another call center starting all over with a new operator.
- After that briefly, calmly and clearly describe the situation: what kind of emergency is it, how many people are involved, what is being done so far. This may be the most difficult part for going through it you have to consider specific circumstances of each type of urgency.
- For instance, if it's fire you have to let dispatcher know what exactly is on fire and whether everyone is out.
- If it's a medical emergency victims' condition and breathing comes first. You also have to confirm if it is male or female and their approximate age.
- In case of a road accident you generally have to focus on a number of vehicles involved, possible injuries, victims' condition and breathing. Also let the dispatcher know if vehicles are still on the road and if any of them are on fire. You may be also asked if there are any power lines affected or any hazardous materials involved.
- After you done reporting the situation itself always ask if there is anything you can do while help is coming. In situation when someone’s life may be on the line you need to be mentally prepared to follow specific instructions you're given. For example, you may be asked for a certain actions to prevent a further injury for a person with broken extremities. It may be necessary to induce vomiting in order to partly neutralize poison. In the most urgent cases it may even be possible for you to proceed with CPR. Remember not to hang up the phone until you told to.
